The history of motion picture sound has been well documented over the years, covering all aspects of film and disc systems, microphones, recorders and amplifiers. But there is a scarcity of information on the development of the cinema loudspeaker which has always been the weakest link in the chain. Most of the early inventors such as Hepworth, Lauste, Poulsen, Engl and Vogt, were concerned mainly with various methods of sound recording and synchronisation, and the absence of audio amplifiers (not yet invented) meant that nobody was working on loudspeakers.
